 Need
for Urban Sector Development: According to the 2001 census,
India has a population of 1027 million with approximately 28per
cent or 285 million people living in urban areas. As a result of
the liberalization policies adopted by the Government of India
is expected to increase the share of the urban population may
increase to about 40 per cent of total population by the year
2021. It is estimated that by the year 2011, urban areas would
contribute about 65 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP).
However, this higher productivity is contingent upon the
availability and quality of infrastructure services. Urban
economic activities are dependent on infrastructure, such as
power, telecom, roads, water supply and mass transportation,
coupled with civic infrastructure, such as sanitation and solid
waste management.

Varanasi
Nagar Nigam was established on 24-01-1959 under the act of Uttar
Pradesh Government i.e, Municipal Corporation Act of 1959 as a
Nagar Mahapalika. In 1994 it was converted in to Nagar Nigam
under the U.P. Government act -2.Within its jurisdiction are
some of the most densely populated areas in the world. It has
also the unique distinction of providing civic services to rural
and urban villages, Resettlement Colonies, etc. The total wards
under Varanasi Nagar Nigam is 90. At present total area under
Varanasi Nagar Nigam is 79.79 Sq. Kms. The Municipal Board was
constituted for the first time in 1959 with Shri. Kunj Bihari
Gupta as Mayor and Shri. P.K. Kaul as Municipal Commissioner.
The total length of road under Varanasi Nagar Nigam is 1170 K.M
and it is graded as B1 city rank. Its total population was 10
Lacks 91 thousand 918 as census 2001.
